Integrating ICT into the Teaching-Learning Process

 

Garcia-Valcarcel (2010) addresses one of the most influential barriers that are stopping the integration of ICT in classrooms with in his article. He believes that teachers are in charge of improving the effectiveness of learning process (Garcia- Valcarcel, 2010). The use of technologies should be present in all subjects as a part of education program and even in interactions between the school and the rest of the community i.e. Parents.

Garcia- Valcarcel (2010) undertook an experimental report and conducted a survey of the teachers (in all age groups- Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary) in Castella and Leon in Spain. The results of the survey showed that teachers already use popular resources such as word processor; PowerPoint and looking up information on the internet but when it came to other resources such as website design skills were very limited. The use of ICT in the classroom was also considered low except in the case of PowerPoint media. Garcia- Valcarcel (2010) believes these results indicate that the ICT skills are not being implemented by administration. Teachers should be trained to use ICT. It is meant to go beyond personal and technical use. Garcia- Valcarcel (2010) notes that it should be clarified that ICT to teaching, this integration procedure is more of a complex process than sporadic use of ICT in the classroom.

It seems to be that if pre-service teachers should have training with ICT. Which in most universities now do. But there should be programs for teachers that have been teaching for years as they have the power to integrate ICT into the classroom.

One thing that I have noticed throughout my research there is a lot of theories and experiments regarding integration and why it is happening. But there isn’t a large amount of articles that talk about ways that Teachers can implement ICT into the Classroom. I believe this is an issue we should be concerned about as there are programs that show the ICT systems available but they don’t give newly graduated teachers an opportunity to implement them.
